Covid Booster Shot Dee Why
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) advises that everyone aged 16 and older who had their initial course of COVID-19 immunisation at least 3 months ago should get a COVID-19 booster shot due to the continuous circulation and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 variations, namely the Omicron form.
It is also advised to take a SECOND booster dose (often referred to as the “winter dose” or “fourth dose”) three months after receiving your first booster dosage. This is necessary for individuals who are immunocompromised, have a significant exposure risk (owing, for instance, to their work or their proximity to an epidemic), or who have other risk factors for developing a severe COVID-19 virus infection.
It is advised to take either Comirnaty (Pfizer) or Spikevax (Moderna) as a booster shot; both are regarded as suitable options.
ATAGI reiterates that anyone with immunocompromising conditions should have a third (primary) dose of the COVID-19 vaccination at least two months after receiving their second dose.
Who is eligible for a booster shot?
People aged 16 and older who had their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine three months or more ago are eligible for the FIRST booster shot. The following situations qualify you for a fourth dose:
- 50 or more years old.
- A patient in a centre for elderly or disabled care.
- Drastically weakened immunity (this will be the fifth dose).
- A 50-year-old or older Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
- 16 years of age or older and with a health issue that raises the possibility of developing a severe COVID-19 illness.
- Anyone older than 16 with a disability who also has other comorbid conditions that raise the chance of a poor outcome.
COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has granted provisional approval for a new version of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty) for use in children aged 5 to 11 years. This approval is based on a recent clinical trial's findings that the vaccine is very effective and that the majority of adverse effects are minor and temporary. In addition to information on the low frequency of uncommon adverse effects following immunisation,, ATAGI emphasises that real-world evidence on the safety of this vaccine in children aged 5 to 11 years is rapidly accumulating overseas.
Why do we need a booster?
According to recent studies, COVID-19 vaccinations lose their effectiveness and ability to provide protection with time.
The COVID-19 virus can cause serious illness, and a booster shot in Dee Why helps you and your loved ones retain a high degree of protection against it.
Which vaccine/s will be used for booster shots?
Regardless of which vaccination was used for your primary course, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved the use of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for anyone aged 18 and above.
The only vaccination approved for use as a booster for individuals between the ages of 12 and 17 is the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
When an mRNA vaccination is contraindicated or a person declines/does not like an mRNA vaccine, AstraZeneca or Novavax can be used as a booster dose.
I’m immunocompromised and have had/am having a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Will I still require a booster?
Your third dosage helps you develop an immune response comparable to that of non-immunosuppressed individuals. It is advised that immunocompromised individuals who have received or are receiving a third primary dose of the COVID-19 vaccination receive a booster dose (first booster). If an infection happens after the individual received their first COVID-19 booster shot, a second booster shot, sometimes known as the “winter booster shot,” may be given at least 4 months or more after the first shot OR 3 months after a confirmed Omicron infection.
